Volunteer Opportunites
Many thanks to all the people who have given their time, energy, and skills to help the Steel Yard grow into what it is today. We would not be where we are without the contributions of our wonderful, dedicated volunteers.

Opportunities for volunteers of all stripes abound at the Steel Yard. Learn how you can contribute:

Teach a Class or be a Teaching Assistant:

Community Course or Workshop: These courses are open to anyone over the age of 15 and can be fine arts or vocationally focused. Courses generally meet twice a week for six weeks. Workshops generally meet twice, for six hours each time.

YEP (Youth Enrichment Partnerships): This program collaborates with local high schools and youth arts organizations to provide residents 15-18 with opportunities to gain hands-on instruction in the industrial arts that have both fine arts and vocational applications. In the past couple of years we have had partnerships with AS220's Broad Street Studio, The Met School, and New Urban Arts.

Graphic Design / Publications:

A graphic design volunteer could help with our quarterly newsletter, our course catalogs, or posters advertising our programs and events.

Shop Monitors:

Our studios are in use every day. Students from our courses and artists-in-residence have access to the shop from 8:00am until 10:00pm. Shop monitor volunteers will help ensure everyone is using the equipment safely and will be around to answer any questions students might have.

Shop Projects:

We always need help with small projects around the studio. Currently we need people to:
-Help us prepare for site renovations this summer.
-Build storage bins to organize our collection of scrap steel.
-Do a little cleanup and maintenance on some of our older machines.
