A nicho, or retablo is a decorative frame, often made of punched metal that is created to place significant importance upon a person, object or belief. Common structural conventions include a shadow box shape, ornamented with hinged doors, textured borders, small windows, and multiple panels. In this class we will discuss typical nicho motifs while exploring design and construction. Students will learn traditional metalsmithing techniques such as cutting, drilling, stamping, soldering, roll printing, and riveting. We will design and creative individual small scale (4” and under) nichos and unique works of art inspired by this traditional folk art style, using copper and brass as our main materials. Students are encouraged to bring sketchbook designs, inspiration and printed images. No previous jewelry/metalsmithing experience necessary—this class is open to all levels. Students with previous experience will have the opportunity to explore advanced fabrication techniques that will allow for greater contrast, volume, and form. Materials and tools will be provided.
