Scholarships Applications for 2016
The Steel Yard is dedicated to supporting individual artists in their pursuit of knowledge and financial independence. For many students our open enrollment courses can be just that; a chance to learn an art form or a trade in a setting that encourages experimentation and personal growth.

Fire Camp is this Weekend!

|Do you like to draw, doodle or design? Learn to bring your 2D design ideas to your 3D ceramic work. In this class students will explore ways to create a variety of rich surface decoration on wheel thrown or hand built ceramic forms. Weekly demos will cover techniques such as slip transfers, stenciling, stamping, slip inlay, sgraffito, wax resists and more. Wheel throwing experience is helpful but not necessary, the course will cover basic hand building techniques to make vessels that will serve as a canvas for design ideas. Students are encouraged to bring a sketchbook to class — this class is open to all levels. Materials and tools will be provided. Enrollment in this course includes additional access one monitored Open Studio session per week; either on Thursday afternoons from 3:00pm – 6:00pm or Sunday evenings from 6:30pm to 9:30pm.|

Originally a native of Rhode Island, Fredric Gorman studied 2D Fine Arts at RISD and Massachusetts College of Art and Design. The past 25 years he has wandered the US and Europe. He spent many years in Amsterdam working as a visual effects designer for a Dutch broadcasting company. After a long creative journey he recently returned to Rhode Island to do a ceramics residency at the Steel Yard. He is currently the Steel Yard's Ceramics Residency Coordinator.
