Summer Youth Camps

Every year the Steel Yard hosts week-long educational summer camps in Metals, Ceramics, and Jewelry. We provide area youth with an opportunity to explore creative industrial arts in a safe and fun environment. All Summer Camp programs are limited to participants ages 14 through 18

Camp MetalHead

  • Spend a week ripping through steel with gas torches and fusing it back together with a 10,000° electrical arc!  Camp Metalhead introduces students to creative metal fabrication. They will learn how to use the MIG welder, the oxygen-acetylene torch, various metal saws, and grinders to heat, cut, join, bend, and polish steel. You will use your new skills to work on personal projects to take home with you. This is a great opportunity to explore welding for the first time.
  • No previous experience necessary.
  • All materials, safety equipment, and will be provided.

Camp ClayHead

  • Jump on the wheel, throw a pot and get your hands dirty at Camp Clayhead! Students will be introduced to the work of designing and making your own pottery. Students in this one-week intensive will explore both hand building and wheel throwing processes. The instructor will demonstrate new techniques each day, and students will explore a wide range of ways to interpret these basic techniques to approach an exciting body of work.
  • No previous experience necessary.
  • All materials, safety equipment, and will be provided.

Camp CopperHead

  • At Camp Copperhead students will spend the week designing and making their own jewelry. Students in this one-week intensive will acquire a solid set of technical skills, and will also exercise their creative design skills. The non-technical side of the class focuses on idea development and the critical-thinking skills needed to realize a vision. This course will review sawing, filing, soldering, scoring/bending, texturing, forming, linkages, wire construction and more.  This is a great opportunity to explore jewelry making for the first time.
  • No previous experience necessary.
  • All materials, safety equipment, and will be provided.

How to register

Summer Camp enrollments are available on a first come first serve basis. Registration for the next session will be open for enrollment in the SPRING of 2018.

Open Studio Access

After successfully completing the program; Metalsheads, Clayheads and Copperheads will have access to our Open Studios free of charge for as long as they are in high school or age 18 or younger. During these studio sessions, students can work on their own projects and spend time experimenting in our shop with the support and guidance of skilled monitors.

Additional Information

Weapons Policy
For the safety of all participants, the Steel Yard has a strict NO WEAPONS Policy in the classroom. We prohibit the fabrication of any weapons in the classroom, including but not limited to knives, daggers, swords, axes, etc.

ADA accessible?

Although we work to make our programs available to all persons, the Steel Yard's historic shop is not fully ADA accessible. There is a four-step flight of stairs to get to our jewelry studio and restrooms, and the floor surface to our ceramics studio is uneven. Students with concerns about their safety and accessibility should contact the office in advance of enrollment.
